Jurgis Kairys will be making preparation for the 2011 FAI WEAF serial contest in Riga and will celebrate „Ultra flight“ decade
Aerobatic master, creator and organizer of the contest Jurgis Kairys
makes preparation for the next year „FAI – World Elite Aerobatic
Formula“ (FAI WEAF) events. It is planned that in 2011 in Romania and
Latvia World Elite Aerobatics will compete according to the contest
rules created by Lithuanian pilot. During this year in those countries
Jurgis Kairys organizes and demonstrates promotional flights. Organizers
are taking experience from it.
The first time World Elite Aerobatics flight contest of „FAI – World
Elite Aerobatic Formula“ took part at 10-11th of July 2009 in Romania.
This contest took part according to the rules „JK Aerobatic Formula“
created by Jurgis Kairys, which were approved by Commission
Internationale de Voltige Aerienne (CIVA) and acknowledged by
Fédération Aéronautique Internationale(FAI).
Jurgis Kairys says: „I prepared such rules specially that professional
pilots could demonstrate the abilities of the plains and use as much
personal techniques as they have, in a way that contestants could feel
ardor, and spectators could easily get what is going on in the air and
could admire the view. During this year we are testing flight spaces,
coordinating organizational processes and advertizing future contests“.
At 7-8th of August in Romania seaside called Mamaia, besides Lithuanian
pilot, demonstrational „FAI – World Elite Aerobatic Formula“ flights
were performed by Italian aerobatic champion „Breitling“ contest pilot
Francesco Fornabaio and six time world aerobatic champion in female -
Russian Svetlana Kapanina.
During Riga‘s feast-day at 21st of August 12 a.m. – 1 a.m. and 6 p.m. – 7
p.m., there will be three pilots: Jurgis Kairys, Svetlana Kapanina and
Castor Fantoba, Spanish aerobatic flights champion, who is the winner of
the first „FAI – World Elite Aerobatic Formula“
Aeronautical contest will take part in Latvia‘s capital for the first
time and will be organized at unique place – above Dauguva river at the
center of the Riga city.
As Jurgis Kairys says: „There will be no obstacles for Riga‘s residents
and city guests to come and see pilots‘ performances. The place is
really convenient and especially beautiful. However pilots will have not
to forget watchfully observe the flight zone and not to forget about
the bridges, which are extended above the river“.
At 21st of August Lithuanian pilot will also remind his famous flights below the bridges.
The epopee of Jurgis Kairys flights below the bridges began at the 4th
of July 1996, when he for the first time legally flew below Kaunas
Pedestrian bridge (the gap between the bridge and river was just 7
meters) during the National day. After the year, Jurgis repeated the
flight at Vilnius and flew below the White Bridge. While meeting the
third millennium at the autumn of 1999, he flew below all 10 bridges in
Vilnius over the river Neris („The flight of the age“). The cycle was
crowned by the upside-down flight called „Ultra flight“ below the Kaunas
Pedestrian bridge at the year of 2000.
Jurgis recalls „Ultra flight“: „With this upside-down flight I wanted to
announce to the world that Lithuania is already free and that we live
here as we want to“.
10 years anniversary of the first legal flight with upside-down plain
below the bridge will be marked by the first time flight above the
bridge of Dauguva river.

Aerobatic flights above the river Dauguva magnified thousands of people
At the centre of Riga’s city celebrating its festival the engines of the
plains echoed at 12 a.m. Aerobatic elite masters - Jurgis Kairys
(Lithuania), Svetlana Kapanina (Russia) and Castor Fantoba (Spain)
greeted the guests and residents of the city by performing group and
individual programs. S.Kapanina and C.Fantoba performed the first part
of „FAI – World Elite Aerobatic Formula“ (FAI WEAF) competition
demonstration.
Aviation show is organized after special invitation of Riga Municipality by Jurgis Kairys and „Flights Unlimited“.
Gintas Bubiers Director of „Flights Unlimited“ and aerobatic pilot says:
“ Riga’s citizens for the first time saw such highly qualified and
beautifully performed aerobatic elite masters show. Besides the fact
that sky was dark and it looked like the rain can start any minute,
thounsands of people left their houses and went to the shores of
Dauguva, which are allocated between the Stonebridge and Vansu, to watch
performances of professional aerobatic pilots.
In the first part of the competition S.Kapanina and C.Fantoba performed 5
obligatory manoeuvres and 3 minutes freestyle programs in the set
territory over the river Dauguva.
The pilots were judged by Lithuanian international category judges:
Algis Erlickas, Vytautas Armonas, and national category judge Donaldas
Bleifertas, results were counted by Vytautas Tautkevičius.
The judges counted the time of flights and gave penalty points for the
mistakes made during the obligatory manoeuvres. The freestyle manoeuvres
were evaluated not only by the technical performance, but also by the
spectaculars view.
In this contest wins the pilot who gets less penalty points. After the
first part of FAI WEAF pilot performances S.Kapanina is taking the first
place with 25 points and C.Fantoba is the second with 26 points. The
pilots will compete with each other for the second time today at
6p.m.-7p.m.
At 6.40 p.m. Jurgis Kairys will fly under the bridge Vansu (the distance
from the water till the bridge is 12-14 metres, depending on the level
of water). In such way, J.Kairys is mentioning 10 years anniversary of
upside down “Ultra flight” under the Pedestrian bridge of Kaunas.
The second part of the Aerobatic flights above the river Dauguva hold the breath of thousands spectators
Before 6 p.m. the crowd between two large Riga’s bridges – Vansu and
Stonebridge - started to grow on the eyes. Everybody around were
friendly chatting about the midday event and the first part of the
flights. They were amazed and now loudly questioned each other: “Will
they really see today the amazing Underbridge flight, which was
performed in the inverted position 10 years ago under the Kaunas
Pedestrian Bridge”? Few minutes after 6 p.m. in the horizon of Riga’s
city showed Aerobatic elite masters: Jurgis Kairys (Lithuania), Svetlana
Kapanina (Russia) and Castor Fantoba (Spain). They came to perform the
second part of „FAI – World Elite Aerobatic Formula (FAI WEAF)”
competition demonstration and were greeted by the crowd applauses.
At first, spectators could see how three pilots expressed their
greetings to the crowd celebrating Riga’s feast-day. Three pilots came
in a formation. Svetlana Kapanina (Russia) was taking the lead with her
plain SU – 26, Jurgis Kairys (Lithuania, with a plain JUKA) and Castor
Fantoba (Spain, with a plain SU -26) flew beside her. They performed a
specially prepared 10 minutes program that included the combination of
formation manoeuvres and artistic solo performances.
After that, the second part of the aviation show began. Two Aerobatic
elite masters – S.Kapanina and C.Fantoba started the second part of „FAI
– World Elite Aerobatic Formula (FAI WEAF)” competition. This
competition consisted of 7 obligatory manoeuvres and a freestyle flight
that had to take 3 minutes precisely per flight. The contestants and
their flights were accompanied by applauses.
The freestyle manoeuvres
were evaluated not only by the technical performance, but also by the
amazing view and impression. The astonished spectators were cheering
their favourite pilots and encouraging them.
After the intensive competition and counted points, the judges
pronounced that the leader of the day and the winner of this „FAI –
World Elite Aerobatic Formula (FAI WEAF)” competition round in Riga is
Svetlana Kapanina and the second place belongs to Castor Fantoba.
At 6.40 p.m. at the horizon of Riga’s city appeared Jurgis Kairys
(Lithuania). The spectators were catching the moments of his performance
from the first manoeuvre till the last one. Everyone was waiting the
moment when the pilot will go below the bridge. Every time when
Aerobatic elite master was approaching Vansu Bridge, the crowd started
to hold the breath. But J.Kairys forced the crowd to wait and astonished
them with the difficult and beautifully performed technical manoeuvres
for about 15 minutes. When that moment came and J.Kairys flew between
the water and the bridge the applauses and whoops of joy started. The
people were grateful for such a glorious view.
At 11 p.m. Aerobatic elite masters were congratulated by the Municipal
Government of Riga and thanked for the amazing show, organized by Jurgis
Kairys and „Flights Unlimited“.
